Finding energy saving home plans to make an environmentally better house is becoming more available to the average consumer at an affordable price. The philosophy when building these is now aimed at taking advantage of the weather conditions of the area and implementing measures to use them to the full advantage of the future homeowner. This means using the sun to provide at least part of the electric power the home requires through solar power as well as putting the windows in locations that will diminish air conditioning needs. At the same time they are still able to give the house’s owner a view to enjoy while keeping the windows at such an angle as to keep the glare under control.
Looking at the energy saving home plans you can see that the rooms are made to allow for lots of sunlight and so cut down on the use of electric lights. The sun shines in and keeps the number of hours necessary to use electricity down. But this is only the beginning, a good energy saving home plan will have many more things in place to build energy efficient homes to keep cost down and energy uses even further down.
Insulation methods continue to improve. Energy saving home plans will show that now instead of putting insulation between a sheet of pressboard and a sheet of gyperock the insulation comes in sheets called structural insulated panels. These are far superior in their insulation capabilities and will be a help in keeping down heating costs. They are also used as sheeting for the walls and so keep building costs down too.
Reflective metal roofs are another item used to diminish the heat that comes into a house when it is hot outside. The color of the roof is often light when used for this job but studies have shown that even dark metal roofs will serve this purpose. Heat pumps are being provided with every house to help get the costs of heating and cooling a home down. The average energy saving home plans include one or two of these with each house currently being built.
If you knew that new energy saving appliances could save you several hundred dollars a year, would you consider buying them? Of course you would. If you are looking to replace an aging appliance or starting out in your first home, that kind of saving makes it worth considering spending a little more on your new washer, dryer, dishwasher, stove or refrigerator. Even your air conditioner or dehumidifier can be energy saving appliances. Depending on what it is you purchase, you could save ten to fifty percent in the cost of energy to run those appliances.
In the last twenty years, technology has made major improvements in energy consumption in home appliances. A refrigerator from twenty years ago cost at least one hundred dollars a year to operate. Buy a fridge with a freezer that is at the top instead of the bottom and you are being more energy efficient. These new energy saving appliances cost only twenty five dollars a year to operate. The types of washers that are best to buy are the front loading ones. These not only use less water and electricity they spin better getting more water out of the clothes before they go into the dryers. This means shorter dryer cycles. Both of these appliances are therefore more energy efficient.
Dishwashers are a big energy user. The best kinds of these energy saving appliances are the ones that have a built in heat booster. This device is used to make the hot water that much hotter for a better cleaning. This is useful because it enables your hot water tank to remain at one hundred and twenty degrees Fahrenheit which is a more energy efficient setting yet still supplies your dishwasher with one hundred and forty degree water for a better wash.
Sometimes the way you use your energy saving appliances will also affect the cost of electricity. Preheating even an energy efficient oven for too long is a waste of energy as is using a large oven to cook a small meal. If you want to save costs use a ceramic pan when baking instead of a metal one and you can turn the heat down in your oven and still have your meal cook in the same time. Sometimes your energy saving appliances could use a little help.
